28A Philosopher sets on opponents. I have ?N?N?S but i could be wrong on the second "N".
Incidentally, I notice that more people use the main topic "Quizzes and Puzzles" than do the sub heading "Crosswords". Is there a good reason for this?

Many thanks. Obviously my "UNION" for 23D - Join the fifth group - is wrong. it must be "UNITE" but why?
join = unite
unit(group) + e(fifth letter)
