I have a Sony surround sound that is supposed to play in 5.1 on compatable DVD's. yet doesn't seem too. I fully understand that some Discs dont play in this format but I have a blue ray player and all my New discs still come out in 2 channel audio. I can't believe something like the new Sherlock Holmes movie is set to 2 channel. So has anyone a plausible explanation as to why or have i been using the right settings. Although when coming off of a disc I think it should set itself automatically.

Errrm, well the first thing that springs to mind is, the new Sherlock Holmes film (a game of shadows) has not been released to DVD or blu-ray yet, so if it's that film you have then it's likely not an official copy!

Other than that, the first question is, is it a all in one system or is the blu ray player separate to the surround system, if it's separate how have you got it connected?

And no, it won't automatically select the right format unless you have set it on automatic, if it's set on a 2 channel mode then it will only play 2 channels regardless of what you put into it.

have you ploughed through the players audio settings is the audio output set to bitstream
Just like Deggers says it sounds like you need to look at the settings on the DVD player itself. There will be different 'surround' options e.g. Multi, Mono, Dolby-Pro etc...

If you aren't sure post the make and model of your DVD player and I'm sure we can help.
the blu-ray player should be connected to the surround system with an optical lead for the sound, hdmi for the picture then in the system menu the audio input must be set to "opt" any signal sent to the system in 5.1 will be played in that format, as long as the system is in "opt" it will automatically select the output signal, based on the original recording....
