people rush out and buy their albums/films/memorabilia? If they thought that much of them surely they would do this while they are still alive?

Dunno, but I can't see me with a Whitney Houston pillowcase just yet;-)
Not so much thinking about the person who has died, more the thought the items bought, especially memorabilia, might go up in value.
Not guilty m'lud...already have whitney's greatest hits...superb voice..so...so..so...sad....
No idea, I'm not looking forward to Whitney's songs being dug out and shoved on the radio all day everyday for the next few weeks though; I think it's a shame that a relatively young woman is dead but I'm never going to enjoy her music.
Never understood it myself. Their music lives on regardless. Whitters had some good tunes in her back catalogue, no doubt about it.

Looking through my MP3 collection I only have one of her tunes and thought 'wonder why I havent got more, she's done some decent stuff' I suppose all the media hype raises awareness of her work.
PAINT A VULGAR PICTURE

At the record company meeting
On their hands - a dead star
And oh, the plans they weave
And oh, the sickening greed

At the record company party
On their hands - a dead star
The sycophantic slags all say :
"I knew him first, and I knew him well"

Re-issue ! Re-package ! Re-package !
Re-evaluate the songs
Double-pack with a photograph
Extra Track (and a tacky badge)

A-list, playlist
"Please them , please them !"
"Please them !"
(sadly, THIS was your life)

But you could have said no
If you'd wanted to
You could have said no
If you'd wanted to

BPI, MTV, BBC
"Please them ! Please them !"
(sadly this was your life)

But you could have said no
If you'd wanted to
You could have walked away
...Couldn't you ?

I touched you at the soundcheck
You had no real way of knowing
In my heart I begged "Take me with you ...
I don't care where you're going..."

But to you I was faceless
I was fawning, I was boring
Just a child from those ugly new houses
Who could never begin to know

Who could never really know
Oh ...

Best of ! Most of !
Satiate the need
Slip them into different sleeves !
Buy both, and feel deceived

Climber - new entry, re-entry
World tour ! ("media ***")
"Please the Press in Belgium !"
(THIS was your life...)

And when it fails to recoup ?
Well, maybe :
You just haven't earned it yet, baby

I walked a pace behind you at the soundcheck
You're just the same as I am
What makes most people feel happy
Leads us headlong into harm

So, in my bedroom in those 'ugly new houses'
I danced my legs down to the knees
But me and my 'true love'
Will never meet again ...

At the record company meeting
On their hands - at last ! - a dead star !
But they can never taint you in my eyes
No, they can never touch you now

No, they cannot hurt you, my darling
They cannot touch you now
But me and my 'true love'
Will never meet again

I think a lot of the time they return to the charts because people download their songs to post on facebook to make it seem like they really care!
I never did like Whitney's songs, and that godawful Bodyguard was one of the most boring films i've ever seen.
There has only been one death off a famous person that has made me feel sad and that was a motogp rider last year. I'm always shocked when this sort of thing happens but I can't see myself having an outpouring of sympathy for someone I never met, just because they had a nice voice.

I find it all a bit creepy the way people on facebook and twitter are so distraught by it all. And a little bit attention seeking.

I'm already sick to death of Whitney songs.
I didn't like her songs either. She slaughtered 'I will always love you'

The two songs I do like is 'My love is your love' and 'It's not right'

I never watched The Bodyguard...and I have no intention of ever doing so.
She was a warbler when she sung, it drove me nuts.
oh yeah forgot that one, liked My Love is Your Love as well.
It's always sad to hear of anybodies death but I didn't buy any of her stuff while she was alive so I doubt if I'll rush off to by any now. I always thought of her as "Wailing Whitney".

Really surprised, thought this was another thread I was gonna get slated for!

Now see there is a kerfuffle because Sony put the price of her albums up after she died!
I agree with you ummm - DP's original is the best version - even DP's re-mixed later version of same song wasn't good.
