Argus
Question Author
Thanks, johnalex. I'm sure you're right, but why not Argos? My dictionary gives Argus (guardian) from the Greek Argos.

argus, noun (with capital Argus) in Greek mythology, Ios guardian, whose hundred eyes Hera transferred to the peacocks tail.

This may have derived from the Greek word Argos but is as Argus that dictionaries and encyclopaedias etc show the word to be used as correct.
