Shooty-- One of the words in the clue is superfluous. ( instructions)
I too would like to know the answer and to many others.
are you saying that if the word that is superfluous is potato for eg. then relative answers could be - king edward, white, red etc. just so i know for future reference
Question Author
Here is the original clue.

Balls, perhaps, trodden on by one beating around like a cat.

So, the clue is either as it was originally posted, or it can read.

1d. Balls, perhaps, trodden on by one beating around like cat. (9)

The superfluous word is either AROUND or A in keeping with the instructions.

Thanks to all for your help
thank you cryptictyro. i have just downloaded 104 and have familiarized myself with the full instructions
Question Author
Thank you Shooty, I have all this solved except 1d, 11a and 13a.

The superfluous word in 13a is Genesis and I have:

_ _ I _ T

I am in complete meltdown mode over 13a
Any chance of the clue for 13a so that others can try to help ?
if E.L.O is correct. i cannot find any link.
Question Author
The clue is:

Writer of 1970s' band Genesis covering single - intro from T. Rex (5)

The word Genesis is superfluous.

I have _ _ i _ T
i was refering to mischka's comment.

I did this last week, and from memory, think that Genesis is the superfluous word, and that the 1970s band (an acronym) begins with 'Electric...'. The writer should then be apparent.

i may not succeed, but i will keep trying. as you said. Any help appreciated
Question Author
Thank you, Shooty E.L.O. it is, as the clue parses as

eliot
i swear i was looking at elliot (two LL's) earlier, but couldn't make any connection. just glad you got there in the end : )
band ELO
single IT

the little bugger : )
could 11a be
S(ock)E(t)S
three points

just a thought
1d WHISKERED (lie a cat)
whisker (=one beating) + ed (balls)
around is the superfluous word
Question Author
Thank you, Confounded.

I've completed the grid at last.
