I've been diagnosed with Posterior Vitreous Detachment (which means the Vitreous pulls away from the back of the eye). I'm being referred to hospital to ensure there is no retinal detachment and in the meantime I'm trying to take it easy eye-wise and am trying to find cures (even though there isn't one!) or at least stop it from getting worse. As the vitreous apparently loses Hyaluronic Acid and Collagen as you age I'm wondering if taking HA or Collagen supplements would help? Or is there anything else I can do? I've turned down the brightness on my computer (and have severely cut down on usage!) and am wearing dark glasses when looking at bright light which seems to help but if you or anyone else has any advice that would be great. I feel like a proper old codger!!

This happened to me about 3 years ago, very frightening, I was out shopping and suddenly I had this brownish spiderweb type of thing block my vision, I got home as quickly as possible.

I phoned Moorfields A & E in London and they said to come up to them the next day (this was evening time).

They throughly checked my eye, I had about 7 different types of drops put in. They said a large lump of vitreous jelly had pulled away but had come off in one large piece. I had no damage to the retina, but they said if it had come off in small pieces, it may have damaged it.

I've had no problems since, but I am quite sensitive to sunlight now and do wear prescription sunglasses.
I know you asked Sqad who is so brilliant on medical matters but just to say I had this a few years ago. I was told to 'keep an eye' on it (!!) and to go immediately to hospital if the extra floaters got worse because of potential retinal detachment. It settled over the next few days and although I seem to have a dark floater that wasn't there before the PVD, the brain has got used to it. Never had a further problem. Apparently slightly more common in myopic eyes.
I have had this happen on both eyes. I took no precautions - just went to the hospital where they reassured me there was no retinal tear. PVD is very common. Eventually you stop noticing any floaters etc. It's frightening when it happens though.

I was referred to the emergency eye clinic immediately when it happened and got a next day appointment. The urgency is only to make sure you haven't got a torn retina.
And yes, it's a sign of becoming an old codger. It has made no difference to my vision in any way. The second time it happened I didn't worry at all!!
Sounds like what I had. I told the GP, he sent me to the hospital to have it checked out. In one eye the hospital spotted a tear and I had to have laser surgery the same morning. No time to worry about it ! Just been keeping an eye on things ever since. Rather more floaters than I could desire, but that's the joy getting older I suppose. Not sure there is much you can do about it yourself.
greeneyedmonster....I agree with all the posters.
Almost certainly no big deal and the only uncommon reason is a detached retina and the symptoms that you have described makes this diagnosis extremely unlikely.
It happened to me too last year. After a long examination at the eye dept they told me to be careful until it settled down which included no sport, bending or lifting and, in my case, to keep an eye on my BP which is sometimes high.
Sadly my days as a trapeze artist are now over :o)

Thanks for all of your replies, they put my mind at rest :-)
My floaters are more or less gone now but I have a blurry patch right in my line of vision. I went to eye casualty and the doc said it was to do with my optic nerve and would settle down but over a month later it's no better. Did any of you have anything like this or can anyone offer any advice? Cheers!
