There are no set rules, some owners feed once a day once a dog reaches 6 - 12 months, but I always feed two meals, morning and evening. Just be sure to split the recommended amount into two meals, as opposed to doubling up.
we do it twice, but there is no hard and fast rules - the back of your packet of food should give you an idea
I would suggest that any large breed be fed twice a day. We have Irish Wolfhounds and when they are pups we feed them 3 times a day and when adults 2 times. It makes it less likely for them to get bloat and other digestive problems. What are you feeding it?
My GSD is 21 months and he is fed twice a day. A small meal for breakfast and his main meal in the evening. A big breed like a Leo is still growing and needs a good supply of food to ensure his legs can support his big body. The quality of food is important too, big breeds need good quality food they can utilise rather than poo out because its not being digested properly.
My cocker spaniel is on purina pr vit puppy food, it seems to suit her, but she does poo a lot, is this natural!.........
lankeela is absolutely right here. We feed our Irish Wolfhounds on a BARF diet, so raw meat, fish, raw meaty bones, vegetables, eggs, apples along with Omega oils etc. We do this because we do not want to be feeding the colourants and chemicals and kibble used in most commercial foods sold today. When you feed raw natural foods, the dogs digest the foods better and hence poo less and very rarely fart. It is also far better for growing the dog out slowly and developing a well boned healthy dog that is not overweight and has a good strong coat. The other reason we feed raw to our Wolfhounds is that ours is a breed that does tend to have a fairly high rate of cancer and cardiomyopathy deaths and some reseach is said to show that the colourants and chemicals in many commercial foods are the cause. But feeding raw is more work and not everyone has the time to do it. So really you need to research the various foods available and try to find the ideal combination for this particular breed.
