Hi carnendog, I think a cmothers blessing is to do with a celebration of a new life.
We might be old Carandrog but we're not THAT old!!!

'Mother's blessing' was a nickname for laudanum in the mid-19th century.

Sorry Dolt it was a snag around the skin on your fingernail. I had one tonight and remembered my mothers expression and wondered if anyone else had heard of it.
Question Author
Sorry Chris not heard of that one.
Your post reminded me of this

Mothers and Daughters

We're daughters and mothers
Not so long ago.
We give and take
And take and give
Along time's endless row.
Love is passed
And love received
To be passed on again:
A precious heirloom
Twice, twice blessed,
A spiritual cardigan.

I'll put it on
And treasure it,
The me I have received,
And when the roles
Reverse again,
I'll have what I most need.

So may our love
Go on and on,
A hundred thousand years;
Mothers and daughters,
Daughters and mothers,
Through joys and other tears.
Scroll down to the 5th page of this pdf (numbered 185 in the original document) and read the section headed "LETTERS TO HUNTER ABOUT PATIENTS AND SPECIMENS". It suggests that the phrase (in 18th century Glasgow) was 'a step-mother's blessing':

He is good isn't he ??
Question Author
Mamya you can always rely on Chris to come up with the goods.
It's either my special magic powers or, just possibly, something called Google ;-)
And your ability to use it .
Buenchico, will you marry me?
Sorry, Dolt.

I'm saving myself for Barmaid (when she ditches her partner) . . . or Mrs Chappie (when she gets rid of Mr Chappie) . . . or SherrardK [complete with her 5 kids!] (when she gives SherrardD the boot)!
;-)
Go for Mrs Chappie Buenchico shes the best, can I at be bridesmaid?
I don't mean any disrespect to Sherrak.
Yes, as long as you make sure that your dress doesn't clash with mine!
(I like to be unconventional!)
;-)

Good night!
SherrardK
ohhh, i like blue, Night x
