Rover engine light what' it mean

The engine light on my daughters Rover keeps coming on intermitently. Is this low oil, loose fan belt? Any ideas

Check ..
Coolant level
Oil Level
Check alternator charging and belt ok .. not perished/loose

They are the first things .. then it gets complicated.
