changing .WMV to .mpeg

Hi, i have downloaded loads of films from the net but they are all in .WMV format. can i chane them to .MPEG so they will play on my DVD player. if not is there any other way to play them on my DVD player. thanks.

i use a prog called dvd santa which converts files to a dvd format.i think its a free download.but it seems to be selective as to what players it works on !
