Like Jno says, it is much simpler than most capital city metros. If you know where you need to get on/off you don't need to speak or understand. I did it for a day a couple of years ago - I can't remember how but had no problems. Get a map, of course.

Only 2 lines so it depends on where you're staying. We found the buses quite good for getting around.

Depending where you want to go, bear in mind no metro stations anywhere near the forum or vatican.
buses are reputed to be cheap, easy and full of pickpockets.
Another way round is the red 'city bus' hop on hop off - pricey but possibly not as dear as taxis, plus you get a tour as well.
When I was there earlier this year we only used the metro once or twice, most of the time we travelled on the buses. I think it helped that our hotel was quite near the railway station which has a bus terminus outside, so going back to the hotel was great, we just hopped on any bus which said 'Termini'.

btw we found having the Roma Pass VERY useful. We got past all the crowds queuing at the Colluseum and got in other places with it aswell. It was worth it's weight in gold.
