A foundation school is a state school funded and run by the local education authority, which pays for any building work, while the school retains control over admissions, staff employment and land and buildings.
In England and Wales, the National Curriculum is the core of the education systems. Three core subjects make up the National Curriculum: English, maths and science. In Wales, Welsh is a core-subject in Welsh-speaking schools.
There are seven 'foundation' subjects: art, geography, history, music, physical education, technology and a modern foreign language (usually French or German). In Wales, Welsh is a foundation subject in non Welsh-speaking schools.
