// Fifa have rejected a Government request that England and Wales be allowed to wear commemorative poppies in this weekend's friendlies, claiming the move would "jeopardise the neutrality of football." //

Not sure how this is any different than a team wearing black armbands or having a minutes silence before a match. Would it be disrespectful to England's guests to just ignore FIFA and pay any fine that might be imposed?

Funny thai I was thinking the same about many on here

Patriotism is the last refuge of the scoundrel?

Anyway I think I'll leave it now - Steve's right it's gone off too much of a tangent
Phil - or Nathan Jessup's
It would now seem that FIFA have backed down

There's nothing wrong with being a pacifist or an idealist Jake, but when it's coupled with a smug sanctimonious contempt for anyone who's ideals don't match yours, it becomes a bit tedious.

The notion that anyone who buys or wears a poppy is somehow saying 'I like war' is juvenile.

Here's a reminder of your definition of facism..

// But when you assume everyone should have the same opinion, should show respect to a cause that you respect...
That's fascism //

..I thought you might like the opportunity to rethink it, as it obviously fits your attitude on this so well.
..and by the way - I still think wearing a poppy on the Football kit is daft, which was my original answer.

As many have pointed out, IF the footballers want to wear one, they can buy one and put it on their jumper like anyone else.
At least when England get stuffed they can relax knowing they died with their poppies on :-)
Very British, somehow.
