Died today. Was he gay as I believe mhe never married but don't remember him Coming Out as it is called?

Not saying that Cliff is gay, but he has shared his home (several of them) with his male "friend" for at least 30yrs, and good luck to him. Remember that some gay men do go with women when they are younger but settle into their gayness later. I know several over here who have also been married to women and then end up happily in same sex relationships.

Netibiza. JS was absolutely not gay. He would have probably got married if it hadnt been for his mum being the love of his life. I wish people would just stop this speculation. I went out with him in the early seventies.

Grasscarp, don't start on me, I never said he was gay, I was just explaining why stars in the 60's and 70's couldn't come out. I loved JS .

I only get concerned about the 'whiff of hypocrisy' when it comes to the sexual proclivities of the recently departed.

There is nonesuch surrounding Sir Jimmy who despite his 'strangeness' ought to be lauded for his fund- and profile-raising and the time he gave to unfashionable causes.

He wasn't gay.

Years ago, I read his autobiography, which I think was called Love Is An Uphill Thing.

He had lots and lots of women.

He was also quite a nasty piece of work, who didn't let anyone stand in his way.

And he was a real character, and charity fundraiser.

He was one of a kind.

He lived in a flat in Brighton at one time, I remember "Who lives in a house like this" and his pushbike was parked in the hall, nothing weird or luxurious there at all.

The doc. with Louis Theroux was quite revealing, and bore out a comment by JS's colleague Dave Lee Travis - as soon as anyone tried to talk about anything personal, he was off on his "Now then now then uh huh uh huh ..." which he used as a deflection - I'm not sure anyone really knew the real JS.

He did go through a phase of publicly saying he 'hated' children because of some media slurs about him being a paedophile.

He was without doubt an eccentric, but also a unique and far-sighted individual, with a heart as big as a bucket. He is a sad loss to the world, and especially to the friends he had in the hospitals in which he worked so tirelessly.

I shall be retiring my JS tea mug tomorrow at work in honour of his passing.
