Very possibly a silly question but having recently moved house I have only just noticed that there are no telegraph poles in the neighbourhood and no airborne cables connected to my house.

This being the case where does my phone connection come from? I have never lived in a property where the phone came from somewhere other than a telegraph pole.

You've obviously moved there from Norfolk

Thanks guys and no we don't have cable. Our town has never been involved in the cable revolution! Although strangely over the years they have installed some here and some there but never finished the connections.
Hi,
Contry areas usually have overhead cables as it is much cheaper than installing duct in footways and roads etc. A pole costs £28 plus £80 labour to install, and poles are normally 60 metres apart. duct in a footway is now around £20 per metre. The cables leave the exchange and travel to a pcp, ( a green box by the roadside) where they split into smaller cables and go off to the houses. the final cable to your house is probably a 5 pair, and depending on the age of the installation will either come up on the outside wall, covered in a piece of grey trunking with a small square cover on the top, or finish up inside the house in the wall behind the master socket.

Thanks old-wos-is-name. Very informative.
Although I'd question the costs quoted!

I very much doubt you could get a pole and install it for £108!
How old is the house? We moved into a new house in 1969 that had a phone point already installed via underground.

The house dates back to the 60's.
