This is my third posting on this message, as Ed tells me that if there is high volume of traffic, some posts can get pushed aside. This must be why it has not displayed in 'Latest posts', so here goes again.
Would someone please be kind enough to look at my original question in Technology of 20 August? I don't know how to do a link.
The following is a response to those helpful people who gave me answers to my question the first time.
I have now tried to check my phone as suggested and have found that I do not have a NTE5 Master socket. This means that I cannot plug the phone in.
My query now is - is it my responsibilty to have this installed or should I contact TT and advise them of this?
If it is my responsibility, what do I have to do?
Many thanks

What exactly DO you have? A phone hard-wired to a junction box that is connected by a wire from outside?
Though the basic answer to is it your responsibility...

You are not allowed to touch the incoming connections on a master socket (just the outgoing connections) so you can't fit your own master socket.

Register a fault with TT who should then pass it to BT openreach who should test and upgrade your socket.
If you have no master box ..you call BT or TalkTalk (if TalkTalk are responsible for the telephone service .. not just broadband)

Personally .. I buy master ADSL/Phone outlet boxes and fit where necessary.
BT are responsible for the line termination inside house, so may charge .. as there is one there.

Buy one of these and get someone to fit it .. it's a doddle ; )

Or to be strictly correct...

You register a fault with TT, they pass it onto BT wholesale, who lose it.... You register a fault again with TT, they pass it onto BT wholesale, who pass it to BT openreach and they then lose it.... you register a fault with TT who pass it onto BT wholesale, who pass it onto BT openreach, who turn up, say they need a working at heights team (or manhole team) and go away.........

(this then caries on for a few weeks along the same line....)

Thank you both for your answers.
Al - you make it sound very Heath Robinson, but that's basically what it is. The line was a BT one and comes into the house into a little box beside/above a window, which I can only describe as rectangular, about 4 inches X 2 inches. There are only wires inside. BT then wired the phone to the lving-room, where the base is. I would imagine that the NTE5 is the upgraded version.

Chuck - no way am I going to touch it, but I'll bear Al's recommendation in mind, believe me.
You are both extremely helpful, and I appreciate it.
Hi AnneMollie,

If you join the TalkTalk Members Forum we can investigate into the fault and advise you further. If you dont have an NTE-5 type socket then the testing would consist of connecting a single alternative corded handset in the first socket in your property (the master socket) with all other equipment removed.

If the noise persists in this setup we can look more in depth and raise a fault to the network teams as necessary

If you would care to scroll down to the end of this thread, you'll see that the last reply was from TalkTalk Support.
It offered me the chance to join a members forum. I clicked on it but went no further.
Then, when I checked the mail account (not TT) I use for AB, I found a message from TalkTalk - the first one in many years.
I am not at all happy about this - AB is anonymous, or as anonymous as the ABers want it to be.
Can anyone clarify what is going on? I feel like leaving AB, which would be a shame, but this makes me feel very uneasy.
Thanks
