The ignorant haven't even bothered to read the article properly that clearly states - it cost nothing! Not one penny.

I could cry over the comments about sending them to Poland

If it costs nothing they should make them all like that. That way everyone who's crazy enough to believe they shouldn't press a button on certain days of the week is catered for.
Convenience for pedestrians but not for vehicles who will often be unnecessarily delayed while a red light is shown for them with nobody crossing. To say this scheme is cost free is to ignore the time wasted by drivers and their passengers.
I was expecting it to be like a swipe sensor or something, not automatically on to green man every 90 seconds, that seems very frequent! That'd be my only qualm with it really, although I wouldn't be surprised if it led to drivers ignoring the lights "knowing" that there'll be nobody using it.

But aren't all traffic lights on busy junctions phased anyway? To regulate traffic flow?

I sorted the responses into 'Best rated' order.

You know what's really depressing? The ignoramuses (or should the plural be 'ignorami') are getting all the green arrows.

I noted that, sp. Very depressing.
All the reasonable opinions are red arrowed.
sp, yeah, but Mr Divvy Driver isn't going to get his nice new shiny Audi smashed up if a Jew walks into the side of it. I've seen many people doing it at night, when they're 'sure' nothings coming they'll just go through the red. I may be wrong, drivers in London may be tremendously considerate and patient, but I do have a few doubts!
sp - yes, as at traffic junctions here - the lights are phased, but unless you push the button you don't get the Wait sign or the green man. Just darkness..... so pedestrians need to push the button, wave, or similar to get it to work from the pedestrian viewpoint.

In Ashford they have introduced a pedestrian and traffic area with no crossings, the instruction is to the pedestrian to "catch the driver's eye if you want to cross" - yeah, right!
sp1814 - Yes, many traffic lights are phased but it is unusual (except possibly during the night) for one flow of traffic to be held at red while nothing is passing the green.
Funny - all the "this scheme costs nothing" posters have disappeared!
this is the first one when i looked has green arrows

Explain how something that costs nothing is a waste of money?

sally is speaking up for the idea how does that make her ignorant
the junction in question (if my memory serves me right) is a huge junction. I don't see this being much of an inconvenience to drivers.

I don't really get what people are whinging about at all.
same here, if the people want it there what is the problem
