What keystrokes do I need to type symbols on here? eg a tick, a heart symbol, or a musical note.

One way is to find a web page (e.g. search for 'tick symbol@ in Wikipedia). Then highlight and copy the individual character from there followed by pasting it in here - just like these:-

✔ ♥ ♩
(that should have been ...'tick symbol'...)

I suppose I could save them somewhere and cut and paste, but wonder if they're available on the keyboard.
You need to have the number lock on your keyboard turned on. (It probably is by default anyway). Then you need to hold the Alt key down while typing out the relevant numbers on the numeric keypad (NOT on the keys above the letters).

I keep a printout of this page next to my desk:

Chris - sorry forgot to say that I'm on a laptop - no number pad.

Just read your link Chris and I have to learn this first.

The numbers are on the fronts of certain keyboard keys: M=0, J=1, K=2, L=3, U=4, I=5, O=6, 7=7, 8=8, and 9=9.

I think the cut and paste option will be easier.

If that's the case, Maidup, you'll have to use the Character Map (assuming that it was installed along with Windows).

Start> Programs > Accessories> System Tools> Character Map

Scroll down to the 'unusual' characters. To select a character you can either click on it and then on 'Select' or (far easier) just double-click on the character. When you've selected everything you want, click 'Copy'. Come to your AB post, right-click and select 'Paste'. (If you think that you'll be needing the Character Map again you can minimise it to the bottom of your screen, so that it's available in a single click).
