turning lights off on my car?

if i have a car that has the sort of lights that are on all the time, sorry cant explain any better, is it possible to switch them off so they arent being used at all?

To actually answer the questions then....

Yes they can be switched off by a variety of ways depending on car, but there is not a simple on/off switch for them. they are designed to be left on all the time for good reason.
