ipod nano 6th generation, please explain what exactly this is.

I am looking to buy my partner an ipod and docking station for his birthday, the only problem is I haven't got a clue what I am looking for. I have seen an ipod nano 6th generation for sale that I can afford, but I don't really understand what this is. Is this just a normal ipod that plays music? Is it any good? And most importantly, what kind of docking station would I need for this? Is it just any ipod docking station or does it need a special one as it appears to be smaller than the other ipods I have seen. Any answers would be very helpful as I am very confused and out of touch with technology. Thanks.x
