Can you tell me of any operas/operettas written by British composers before G&S?

Prominent British composers include Henry Purcell the composer of Dido and Aeneas in about 1689.

Also George Frideric Handel (though he was born in Germany, he spent his composing life in London) 1685 - 1759.
