Forgot to say, apparently I need a functioning 10/100baseT network card. I got my new PC about 2 months ago(running on XP Home), so how do I find out if I've got one?

Very good answer, you could also try looking at the device manager (right click My Computer-manage-device manager is under the system tools) and see if you have an entry for a network adapter.

Well using j2buttonsw's instructions, I've got 2. One is a 1394 Net Adapter #3 and the other is RealtekRTL 8139 Family PCI Fast Ethernet NIC #2. Do they sound good enough? Doesn't say anything about 10/100 etc. BTW lisaj, is the picture of the normal 'jack' for the phone connection?

Normal ethernet supports 10 megabits per second, and fast ethernet does 100 megabits per second. Hence 10/100. The 1394 is a firewire network card, which you can ignore.

Yup, you have a 10/100 ethernet card installed alright. lisaj's photo was of an RJ45 socket which is like the big brother of the RJ11phone socket. An RJ45 plug is the standard for ethernet connections using CAT 5 standard cable. You just have to find another 199 people who live by you with the same!
