The tapetum is fully matured between six and eight months. It is a special reflective layer in the back of the eye that enhances their night vision. It's also the reason dogs eye are blue in flash photography, unlike the red eye effect with humans.

not always true about the red eye, weimaraners can photgraph with red eye!!

my weims eyes changed from blue to a very pale green very gradually but it starts at about 6 wks old the eye colour is normally totaly changed by about 12 wks. I agree with woofgang I have loads of red eye pics of him!
