In Cross of Iron, James Coburn plays the hard bitten German Sergeant on the Russian Front. Maximillian Schell plays his superior, a Nazi fanatic interested only in winning medals no matter how many of his men have to die to achieve it. At the end of the film, the two of them are in a building with a battle going on outside. Coburn forces Schell outside at gunpoint, and says "Come on, I'll show you where the Iron Crosses grow".
