My friend recently found a bald patch the size of a ten pence piece. The doctor said it was a fungal infection but it sounds like alopecia to me as she doesn't have any dryness, or itching. Any comments/advice/thoughts?

it could be ringworm which is a fungal infection. has it got a ring round it?

Hi, fungal infections are not always dry and itchy so the doctor is probably correct.

Your user name is very, shall we say generic, any particular reason?

Hi there, same thing happened to me a year ago last february (2004) - I came into work and someone pointed out the patch - similarly sized to a 10p piece - I never really got to the bottom of the cause but assumed its an all or nothing situation where I may need to shave the head totally :-) I gave it a couple of months and it came back as normal within about three months. It never itched as you mention either (My initial thoughts were that someone had shaved this patch when I wasnt looking (Long Story) but I would advise your friend it will grow back :-) at the time, I did have a look on the internet for reasons and basically they do mention fungal infections, but it does occur overnight and will put itself right fairly shortly.

All the best
