house smells coming through from nextdoor

Why do smells from nextdoor come through to our house? Our house was built in 1910, the house, now adjoined to us, was built 20 years later - so I can't understand how structurally it would allow the smells from nextdoor to emanate into our house.

Yes - but our house was built in 1910 as a semi, in the 1930's another house was built on the other side, effectively making it a terrace. It's the house that was built in the 30's that we have the issue with.

The same thing happens at my parents house. Whenever their neighbours cook the smell of garlic wafts up into the bathroom. They always seem to use garlic.

Well smell is carried on the air, so unless your house and the neighbours house are air tight odour are bound to seep through.

This happens round ours as well...
i think that especially around chimney breasts, there are mortar gaps, and chimney linings are often decrepit, so draughts carrying cooking smells etc seep through as the job of a chimney is to make air pass up it.

Have the chimney breasts been removed? Our old house was fine regarding smells from next door, they took theirs down and the smell of cigarette smoke was awful.
