I have tried altering the setting to uk in regions but it doesnt make any difference...anything else I can try??
you have to change the keyboard setting, not just the region setting.. it should be in another tab in the regional settings. Something called "input" or "keyboard" ...

Go to settings-control panel-keyboard

Click the language tab now on the left it should say

"English (British)" and on the right under the heading "layout" is should say "British" if not select "properties"and you can choose a layout. It is not enough for the language to be British the layout must be as well.
