completely a guess, please correct me if im wrong, i know they name them alphabetically, e.g. the first one will have a name beginnig with A, the second with B, and i guess there arent enough hurricanes per year usually to get that far through the alphabet
Well we are on WILMA at the moment so what happened to Q and U?
Sorry my last answer was in reply to SteveB, not to Pangolins original question!

For Atlantic Names, perhaps it was decided there are too few male and female forenames using those initials to warrant inclusion in the roster.

You will notice that for Eastern North Pacific Names they do not use Q and U only.

X alternates between Xina & Xavier
Y       "              "     York & Yolanda
Z       "              "      Zelda & Zeke

Depends on how many names they need for lists, http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/aboutnames.shtml

Hi kempie, excuse my dup, you beat me to it.

Hi Pangolin, there is hurricanes starting with those letters.  Every hurricane is named, but we don't hear about those ones on the news because they are mostly storms out at sea, so even  F1 storm will get named, but as soon as it hits land and is classed as a threat, that's when we get to hear about it - we just didn't hear about the other ones in the interim :)

Because theres no names begining with Q, U, X Y or Z, next because weve ran out of letters we go into the Greek alphabet!
