My 87 year old father is going to sell his house and move in with me. It is a mutual decision, he's on his own and so am I. He is relatively fit but recently, had a pacemaker fitted. A friend suggested he claim Attendance Allowance but when i checked whether he would be eligible, it appeared not. Does any know if we would be entitled to any financial help? Thanks in advance.

why not give your local Age Concern a call. They should be able to advise of what benefits he is entitled to.

Best wishes,

Thanks very much for your help and good wishes. My dad has some savings and i thought he'd probably not be entitled to ought. We have to be grateful that he's reached the age he has without any major problems. I will get in touch with Age Concern, i hadn't thought about them. Cheers.
I would check it out. I know it was some years ago that I moved in with my mother, but she was in receipt of Attendance Allowance and the fact I lived there made no difference.
Attendance allowance is not means tested. If your father is active he will not be able to claim it. However, I would have thought the fact that he has a pacemaker would have restricted him to a certain extent. I wouldn't have thought he could walk very far. You should get the forms and fill them in to make sure. There is no harm done by applying and he might be missing out. I think you can get the forms from the local office of social services. When you complete the forms you should remember that the questions about movements such as how far can you walk mean without pain. You do not have to be a helpless invalid to claim it.
Age Concern can advise you with this!........not sure personally, but they will advise you!........
I was surprised when we looked after my MIL that we could claim something, even though we had savings and an early pension. She had attendance allowance, but our payment was not means-tested.
Our payment might have been called carers allowance. CAB told us about it.

Thanks to all for your help and advice. I will certainly contact Age Concern and Welfare Rights just to make sure.
If he's selling his house I presume that money will go into the bank. He certainly will not be eligable for financial assistance if he has more than £16.000 savings.

Don't think Attendance Allowance is mean tested Jem.
Is it not Dennis? Oh! well a trip to the local C A B is in order then.
They'll sort it. Good Luck.
