pull up what you can then attack the glue with a hot air stripper and a scraper
What type of floor is it?
Don't know what the brands would be in the U.K., but here in the U.S. one would find wall-paper stripper at the DIY store, either in a premix jug or a mix-required bottle. At any rate, warm the mixture up in a throw away pan or bucker, using a spray bottle or garden sprayer, spray it on top of the offending carpet until it's quite wet. Let it set for an hour or so and then, using a pair of pliers (no, not two airplane pilots from Puerto Rico) pull up a corner and keep pulling. Once it's up, use more spray to remove remaining glue...
You could try the professional way:

Should be able to hire something similar

Thanks all, the dremel tool looks fab but i'll try pulling up and doing the heatgun and scraper method first, tis not a huge space. The wee bit floor i can see looks good underneath (wooden)
