Who ever uses the expression "stoned" to mean "intoxicated" ?

Anyone ?

There's a clue in today's crossword ...

10(A). Severely punished for being drunk (6)

I'm guessing the answer is "STONED", but seriously ...

... you'd only say someone was "stoned" if they'd taken some other drugs, surely ?

Presumably, "RATTED" doesn't work, because it's not a punishment ... except in the book "1984" when the Thought Police have the cage with the rats in it.

unfortunately I am old enough to remember that meaning
I have only ever known "stoned" to be mean drunk. I was really surprised to know a few years ago that it now means drugged...how times change!
Hammered : )

Stoned means druggied up .. as in the old days.
Not where I come from Albags.
"stone drunk" has long been a (moderately) common phrase, since way before the heyday of other drugs.
I grew up when 'stoned' meant 'drunk' and drugs weren't spoken about. I must admit I still think of it as meaning 'drunk', depending on the circumstances.
Here...'twisted' is drunk...'stoned' is drugged...I have been the former...never the latter...thankfully.

..'though technically...I suppose they are both a 'drugged' state. .....=)
actually, as I recall, stoned just used to apply to marijuana; it didn't apply to cocaine, LSD etc. This may well have changed; there's a whole new world of drugs since my day.
