Whiskies, you mean? Dozens. And it is indeed the water. In fact, the word 'whisky' itself comes from the Gaelic 'uisge beatha', meaning 'water of life'.
here you go!:

How many brands of Scotch Whisky are there?

More than 2,500 brands of Scotch Whisky are sold all over the world, of which as many as 200 are available in the home market. Many of them are sold only locally or to private clubs and individuals.
There are 320 listed here:

See here to see how many distilleries there are:

Scotland has a climate well-suited to growing barley (but less so to growing hops for beer, or grapes for wine), so it's unsurprising that someone there worked out how to use barley to make a beautiful drink ;-)

There are NO scottish whisky, there are 320 Scotch whisky...
LOL! No need to do that... It is, however, that Gaelic has a vocative case, like Latin, Greek etc.

And, in Gaelic, my name is Marc. However, when you are calling me by name to my face (i.e. the vocative case), it's "a Mhairc"... ;-)

In fact, if independence comes and I can have a Scottish passport, my name will be Marc MacUilleim.
Don't forget there are are some very nice Irish whiskies knocking about, I don't know why they're not more popular but they deserve to be
Paddywak, point of order here...

Scotland produces whisky / whiskies
Ireland (and elsewhere) produces whiskey / whiskeys
I'll accept that mark, I usually get my whisk(e)y right but I always seem to forget about the plural
The reason Irish whiskey isn't popular? Hoots mon! I've heard some cynics say that irish whiskey going down tastes like Scotch whisky coming up !!!
and only Kentucky produces bourbon. Now theres a drink ;-)
bourbon can be made anywhere in the USA.
I'llstick to brandy ta - the above stuff kills my throat,
Good whisky is a joy, well as long as you don't overdo it, !
