I am trying to buy a refurbished desk top pc for my son - we will need it to work somewhere that there isn't a phone line - we have wifi - if I buy one of these wifi adaptors and plug it in, will that work?? Sorry for being a bit clueless :o) it's just that whilst laptops all seem to have that built in, desktops don't, especially as I will be buying a older model.

Thanks for your help.

Yes. I'm doing it with my lappy. The inbuilt switch got dodgy, I was told it would cost up to £90 to fix as it might need a whole new board, but I bought one of these for a tenner in wilkinsons.
Yes it will (a dongle)
Sometimes helps to have and use a USB extension lead so you can a) get at it .. and b) improve the signal by moving it.

albags - no idea what you mean by W7 - told you I was a bit clueless! That 2nd link looked great - think he would love a wee gizmo like that - do you think it would work okay with a home hub?

Yes .. they are good gadgets Belkin. And they have great support and good software.
Make sure it's XP on the PC/Desktop though.

lol, I have heard of that- we are still xp in this house. Our current desk top we've had since 2002 - does me fine. Son is currently running minecraft through his net book but he tells me "it's a bit laggy" (he's just turned 11) so anyway, he want's to buy a desktop with his birthday money plus some of his savings and our local computer store led us to believe they could do something for his budget and then obv couldn't be bothered so upped their charge by £150! Some of the techie guys on here gave me some links and I've also seen a few on Amazon that look like they fit the bill, so this was the last piece of the puzzle - if we get this sorted he will be one happy boy!
Good. Yes .. lads certainly aren't laggy with techno-jargon these days.

These are pretty easy to set up. Al.
Just one word of caution:
when BT couldn't reconnect my phone line, I tried to get a wifi adapter (previously used on an old laptop under XP) to work on a laptop under Vista, to get internet access at my local library.
It wouldn't work as I needed to download an additional programme (forgot the technical term).
I ended up getting mobile broadband (veeee-ry slooooo-w).
