My only experience of NVQs is a customer service one which soon to be redundant colleagues were allowed to do during work time while the rest of us actually did the work. Being asked to help with a few questions I thought they were winding me up. No, the questions really were simple and obvious and needing some basic points with padding. My husband has an NVQ (cant for the life of me think which one as a painter and dec. he has but was told he couldn't fail it). I know many have to take these for their job.

Your quoted question confirms my suspicions re NVQs and (no offence to you or anyone taking one) can only repeat that I dont believe these to demand much more than work related waffle.

One word instantly came to mind reading it tho - Scrabble!
To overcome language barriers you have to look at the reasons of the barrier. for example..
1. hearing impaired
2 sight impaired
3. do not understand the language
therefore you have to find alternative ways of communication such as

1. an interpretor
2. some one in the work environment who can sign
3. pen and paper ( stroke patients whom cannot speak)

what they want to hear is that your work place understands that there are different reasons why people may not be able to communicate effectively.
how you can identify these people.
what resources do you have in place to help these people.
and the fact that you are acknowledging that there is a barrier.........you are tuned in to peoples rights and the fact that they need to understand and consent to what ever is planned for their care. i hope this helps you. I have just passed my NVQ 3 in looking after Radiology patients but it's very similar to HSC. Is this the communication unit ? have you got to do 02 as well ?
you could get everyone together in a circle and ask the most confident person to start talking about their thoughts, feelings etc. once someone starts to talk openly hopefully others will follow. or you could ask people to write down feeling etc when they are feeling it then all come together to talk about it.
finding other methods of communication would be letters, phoning, e-mailing etc.
hopefully this will give you a idea.
good luck. i know nvq's can be hard. it took me two years to finally finish mine.
Hi Grandmacath, Fuzzybee has pretty much covered everything, although your assessor might want you to mention referrals to speech and language therapy.x
Hi Cath,
Is this communication between patients / service users or team members? Is there a distinction in the pc's? I'm an NVQ Level 5 tutor and deliver the Registered Manager's Award.
If the pc's do not distinguish who you are enabling to communicate, you might want to consider evidence such as times when you have chaired meetings which have allowed everyone to speak and express their view (minutes of meetings can be your evidence). Relating to service users you could consider any social activities which you are involved in which encourage service users to communicate with each other and yourself (perhaps a witness testimony from a colleague or a manager could be used here as evidence). Other eg's of suitable evidence could include accompanying a service user to a meeting / doctor's appointment where you enabled the service user to explain things clearly and re-inforce their point of view.

I hope this helps, I'm usually here on AB from 9am-5pm if you need any more help.

Ooooh that's handy to know Cherie. I'll be doing my RMA soon!!!!!x :-)
rabbitygirl............know exactly what you mean.
when I was doing mine I needed an nvq to understand the question in the first place!!
I used to read it and re-read over and over until when you actually broke it down it was such a basic question I was like "why didn't you bl@@dy ask that in the first place"
I must say that it was actually hard work because it took up such a lot of my own time escpecially with 2 little uns every spare minute was spent studying, mine was 12 units and it took 18 months, BUT then sense of achievment i felt when I had finished was actually quite overwhelming. I was even a bit tearful when I was presented with my certificate and badge.
I think it just shows that you are actually understanding why you are doing something rather than just doing it.
I appreciate with paint and dec one your hubby probably knew exactly what he was doing but for me it did give me a little bit more understanding especially within the hospital environment it definately made me feel more confident.

Well, I'll be here if you need any advice x
