the KFC ad has jogged my memory...i've always liked what I've heard of Northern Soul music and have often thought of investing in a compilation album as a taster of the scene. What are the quintessential tracks that no compilation should be without? Of the 3 or 4 I found on Amazon, only one had the KFC track and none had the only other 'famous' northern soul track i know which is the original of 'Tainted Love'. So come on swingers, help me out. What are the top tunes of the genre?

If you want the more 'mainstream' Northern hits - try these - Move On Up - Curtis Mayfield SOS - Edwin Starr Two Can Have AQ Party - Marvin Gaye & Kim Weston Backfield In Motion - Mel & Tim My Man A Sweet Man - Millie Jackson There's A Ghost In My House - R Dean Taylor Out On The Floor - Dean Parrish Sweet Soul Music - Arthur Conley Love Machine - The Miracles Time Is Tight - Booker T & The MG's The Night - Frankie Valli Here I Go Again - Archie Bell & The Drells Sweet Talkin' Guy - The Chiffons Long After Tonight Is All Over - Jimmy Radcliffe and if you want the more obscure material, there are a number of websites- just type 'Northern Soul' into your search engine.
A few more: Frank Wilson: Do I Love You (Indeed I Do) - Marvin Gaye: This Love Starved Heart of Mine - The Temptations: Come On Back to Me Baby - The Marvelettes: I'll Keep Holding On - Spinners: What More Could a Boy Ask For - Virgil Henry: You Ain't Saying Nothing New.

Just a small selection from "This is Northern Soul!" Volume 1 - sorry if I've doubled up on andy's post anywhere!

There's a new series of Northern Soul compilations in the shops at the moment, all reasonably priced. HMV appear to have huge numbers in stocl - obviously expecting lots of us to be loving the KFC adverts!
I had a friend at school who was a Northern Souler and he used to rave on about a song called "The Footsie", but I don't know who it was by (or indeed whether it was spelt "The Footsie" ("The FTSE"?)).
Essential track - 'Too Late' by Larry Williams and Johnny 'Guitar' Watson.
In answer to j2, my girlfriend has just walked back into the room proudly brandishing her copy of Footsee by Wigan's Chosen Few which came out in early 1975. WCF are not to be confused with Wigan's Ovation who were responsile for the execrable Skiing In The Snow.
Lodekka, Gawd bless you! I thought I was going to spend the whole weekend wracking mine (and all around mes) brains(s). Whatever happend to the WCF? LOL!
Can someone tell me the name of the tune featured in the kfc ad and who sings it, much appreciated.
Big Dave - KFC in their wisdom have more than one advert running in this campaign - the best I can say is click on http://www.commercialbreaksandbeats.co.uk/results.
asp?searchString=kfc
and see which one matches the one you're thinking about.
Lodekk, cheers found what i was looking for, Nice!
