Get yourself a German keyboard. About a tenner on ebay.

I live in Germany but use a UK keyboard.  I use the ASCII codes - http://www.lookuptables.com/

For instance, to get the 'ss' you press the 'alt' key whilst typing in 225 on the keypad.

These are already incorporated into Windows so you don't need to download any further fonts.

Once you remember the numbers you'll be able to enter them pretty quickly!

Just go to microsoft word - insert - symbols and it gives a grid of all the symbols and a very basic description.

It's where I found out about the (I found the symbol clicked insert and then cut and pasted from word to here)

cherrybombs answer does work but it's very slow compared to the ASCII codes but it depends how frequently you're going to be inserting special characters.

hold the alt key down, and use the number pad on the right of your keyboard.

Alt + 132 =    Alt + 142 =

Alt + 129 =    Alt + 154 =

Alt + 148 =   Alt + 153 =

Alt + 225 =
