microwave oven

my 6 years old microwave has a small part of its rubber type door seal damaged could i repair this gap neatly with black plastic insulating tape, and it be safe from leaking radiating waves

what's the black strip round the door made of ?
You can but a new microwave for about £20-£30, is it really worth trying to mend yours?

its only around 1/2 an inch that damaged and yeh i know there not expensive i can afford one no probs but hate throwing good working order things out if they can be repaired and kept looking new,

that sounds daft i mean repaired like new and put back in good working order
This is a fun thing to try....
Mobile phones and microwave ovens work on similar frequencies, just at different power levels.
Put a mobile in the oven and try calling it. If it rings then you have a leak!

thank for that did test with door closed ,didn't ring it did with door open so ok even with slight damage to seal Russell hobs say it normal for seal not to be airtight any way to allow air /steam to escape during use so
