Most likely Pitcairn Island of Mutiny on the Bounty fame... just before the Second World War it had a population of around 250, but now has shrunk to less than 50...
Oh... it's in the southern Pacific Ocean and, I think, still a British Colony...
well does it have be discovered as such or does can it just be the least inhabitaed island? In Denmark we have more than one very small island with only one person living on it. Quite lonesome if you ask me. Arghh I just reread you question and I guess my answer is pretty irrelevant, but here it is anyway :0)
Just to make my answer even more redundant I would guess that there are many such islands all over the world...

last I heard of Pitcairn, half the islanders were having to build a jail to imprison the other half in, after many of them were convicted of child abuse (the trial was held offshore). The perils of living in a very small society.

I'm sure the Danes behave better, of course. But yes, imagine those bare little islands, not far offshore, in Ingmar Bergman films, where there's just one house and the inmates are despairing about each other and the silence of God...

Pitcairn has 0.98 inhabitants/km.

Greenland has 0.03 inhabitants/km.  The Falkland Islands are even less than Pitcairn.

Monaco has 16,620 but the most populated place apparently is Macau a territory of China at 17,684.  The world (land only ) density is 43 inhabitants/km.

Lundy Island in the Bristol Channel has a population of about 18.

It depends really if you are talking numbers or density per km as I had assumed.

According to this, the least densely populated island is Ellesmere in Nunavat, Canada.  But in terms of number of people on any particular land area it is likely to be somewhere quite remote but not unique.
