Hope someone can help! We're trying to sell our touring caravan, and husband has put it on ebay. Neither of us are ebayers, and we've had a lot of requests for cash on delivery/collection, even though the ad states paypal only (to protect all parties.) The latest request that we've had is to do a payment through paypal, then collect straight away - but how long does a paypal payment take to clear? And is there a limit on amounts through paypal? Confused!

Eddie51 - you can take photos of the buyer, you can get signatures, you can video the transaction but PayPal will not accept any of it as proof.
I you cannot provide with a tracking number from Royal Mail or a recognised courier PayPal will automatically give a full refund.
The only recourse then is either the police or small claims court.
I don't understand this either. I've had occasional eBay disputes with buyers (stuff not received etc) and PayPal only make the refund when I instruct them to. Under what circumstances do they just refund the money to the buyer?
Credit card chargeback is one example:

And buyer collects and claims Item Not Received.

One such criteria is when accepting Paypal, you must be able to prove to Paypal that the buyer has received the item. This is why, regardless of value, all my items are sent via a signed for service. If you cannot prove an item has been received, the buyer can open an “item not received” claim against you. If this happens on an item that has been collected, you could not prove this and Paypal would refund the payment in full leaving you without the item and without the money (& maybe a negative balance in your Paypal account & threats of debt-collectors).

I am shocked that some eBay sellers are unaware of this scam. The eBay community boards have lots of disgruntled sellers complaining about this and PayPal make it very clear that to qualify for Seller Protection you MUST post the item using approved services that provide an online tracking number.

Thanks for all of your advice - caravan now sold! Bank transfer for the full amount and the buyers collected - they were really nice too!
