I have just taken a kilner jar of wholemeal flour down from the kitchen cupboard (it's been there for about 3/4 months) and just as I was about to start weighin it out, I notice the surface was ALIVE with little things!!! About the size of a flea (I guess) and literally swarming over the surface!!!! Yeugh!!! What are they and how did they get into the sealed jar?? Am repulsed!!

I have a real problem with weevils - could I just put the flour i the freezer and leave it there until I need it ?
Put sage leaves wherever you store flour...and they should keep away..that's what I read after finding my bag of flour full of mites...but still don't trust keeping flour for any length of time now.
ewwwww! Is this why on cookery programs and in recipes they tell us to sieve the flour?

The daughter found some in herbal tea bags................
We once had a tupperware container, supposedly airtight, where we stored semolina. When I came to use some, it was moving like shifting sands because it was full of baby ants! Still makes me feel sick just thinking about it!
I've got a bag of flour thats been in my cupboard for a while. I am not even going to look, it's going straight in the bin!!

Feel like I have done my civil duty today and provided a public health warning service!! Seriously, they were horrible- flour is gone, as is the kilner jar - couldn't face reusing it. Shall only be buying when I need it in future to avoid the issue - hoping the flour is fresh when I buy it of course!!
We had them and they are flour mites. Best thing is just get rid of all flour products and clean the palce they were stored. I did this and problem solved as the mites have no where to live.
Some kind of mite, I think. Not uncommon, though.
