Sorry for this morbid question but is the human body decomposed when buried in a vault or a crypt where it is not accessible to the organisms and creatures found in a ground burial. Does natural mummification take place usually.

the body itself contains bacteria that will decay it even in a steril buriel as stated above
It all depends on how well the body is embalmed and how well the burial crypt is ventilated. Bodies often remain intact for years in strategically well designed crypts. If the mausoleums and crypts are not well designed with proper ventilation, the caskets might burst as pressure build up on hot summer days leaking gas and anaerobic bacteria. BTW quite a few universities have been built above ancient crypts and tombs, some dating back to 1140. http://www.superschol...ures/sinister-crypts/
