My desktop computer won't start. It keeps sticking on "starting windows", and I have to force a shutdown. This has been happening intermittently, but now I can't get it to start at all. It runs on Windows 7. HELP PLEASE!

i had that once i had to do a reinstall to cure it
(all my docs / pics / music etc were already backed up)
Have you tried starting your PC in safe mode? It may be that a piece of software or a hardware driver is causing a problem preventing it from booting into Windows. Take a look here:

No idea but I have had this occasionally on XP. Just last week the the latest time. The travelling bar doesn't move.

I rebooted in Safe mode and tried again and again if necessary doing nothing else. You could try Most Recent Know Good Setting which I also do but it seems no different on the next round.

It comes good and doesn't do it for a year of two.
Try to do a startup repair by using F8 on bootup and selecting repair my computer from the advanced boot options. If this does not work you can boot from your Windows 7 installation DVD and follow the prompts until you get to Install Now but instead click on Repair Your Computer on the bottom-left of the page

Thanks everyone for your advice. I ended up restoring my file from my backup, but unfortunately I lost about 3 weeks' work.
What I don't understand is I did a back up on 6/5/11, yet I only had the option of restoring from a backup dated 20/4/11. On my hard drive, there is the option of restoring files from 6/5, but now I'm not sure if that will cause me more trouble, as I had to spend a considerable amount of time updating some of the work I'd lost in the interim, and not sure if this option will bring back the files I backed up on the 6/5
restore only keeps so many back ups, it deletes as i goes along
if you want to save any work save it to another hard drive or plug in flashcard or cd

Thanks deggers but what I don't understand is the back up that was restored was earlier than the last one I did (although that one took all day to do and then said it wasn't complete).
Talking of backup,I do this onto disc..but do I have to do this all the time otherwise will get out of date..or can I add to the disc???
