...do they need a pc connection to work or are they connected directly to the phone line and/or router?

From my reading of the current 'Radio Listener's Guide' internet radio can be accessed either by PC or by WiFi radio. WiFi radios usually use a domestic wireless broadband router although it says some can be connected by wire.
