Call me a grumpy old man (you'd be right), but what advantage does anyone secure by queuing all night outside a store just to be one of the first to own one of these gadgets? Are some people's lives so shallow for 'first ownership' to be important to them?

I totally agree with you. To queue up all night to be first to buy any gadget or game is very sad. They must lead completely shallow lives. Is that all they live for? God help them if they ever had a real traumatic crisis in their lives.
SP

That's fine by me if that is what you want but the OP's point was about waiting all night outside shops to get one.
david, I would never queue all night for anything but I don't see how that makes anybody "shallow" and what makes you think that is all they live for and why do you think they couldn't cope with a traumatic crisis.

I'm sure the majority of these people that queue all night have perfectly normal lives and manage perfectly well the same as most people.
I find it a bit strange that people go through this queueing all night but I certainly don't see them as inadequate or incapable.

I actually found your response to all this more worrying to be honest!
I agree with sp 1814. I'm a 67 year old widow, and use my wonderful iPad for everything. Barely ever turn computer on now. And to boot have done/ assembled 4 presentations for illustrated talks, on the Keynote app!
Can't actually see the advantage of the ipad2 having a camera, though, but if it's lighter and thinner, tempting!
People just get excited about things. It's more about the event than the actual item. It's not about securing an advantage, it's about being part of an event.
I haven't got one by the way, and unless someone buys me one, I never will have.
God you lot are so out of tune.
apple knows how to con teh simple minded, apple is expensive, ergo most peopel that are early adopters or have apple products have a disposable income than your self.
Do you lead such a shallow life that what peopel do in there won time causes you to write to this forum (I know im doing it too)

I have an ipad, my 10 year old has an ipad, they get used alot, he is well on his way to a third language now, and uses it for academic as well as palying.
for those of you that cant see the point, dont worry about it.

I work in IT and have all manner of laptops and PC's i have obtained over the years, with out doubt the ipad is the best purchase in this field, I have a long comute in the morning so music and video and games, I can happily write docs (word excel) do my email surf all that stuff its perfect for me, might not be for you.

Would I wait over night to get one er no, i wouldnt
would i queue for more than an hour probably not.

but then i would not do the same things for harrods sale a new harry potter book, or free night at stringfellows (well..maybe)

I dont think any body who buys apple does it to impress or show off, there is no getting away from the fact they are just better than any other manufaturer in terms of design, they get it write far more often than not. design will out way function when it comes to buying.
Apple dont create products for you to use in the same old fashioned way you currently use they try to push things forward a bit.
Flash, before apple said no, everyone complained about how slow and fat it ws
no USB, so??? use wireless or cloud storage which is cheaper and easier
its just a media device!!, err ok
I cant install photoshop or my other software on it, yeah thats not what its for again its not aimed at people who buy a laptop and expect to keep it for 5 years.

ha sorry im too old, and get carried away, apologies about my rant,

I like them if you dont that fine too, thanks for sharing
I have won an ipad in a competition at work about one month ago. You had to submit pictures and anyone who did got entered in a draw. Runners up got £100 Amazon vouchers, and I was hoping to get one of those. I told them not to buy the Ipad until the ipad2 was out, so I will be getting it next week.

Fever, my question was about people queuing, not actually owning the gadget. I'm sure it's very useful (but it doesn't look like it helps you spell).
