A GRANNY wielding a spade cut off the internet to an entire country while scavenging for copper.
Georgian police arrested the 75-year-old who single-handedly severed web connections to neighbouring Armenia with her shovel.

The elderly woman — dubbed the 'spade hacker' — had been digging for scrap metal in the village of Ksani when she struck a fibre-optic cable running between the two nations.

The cable serves both countries as well as Azerbaijan — all three internet providers in Armenia were crippled for hours and services in all three countries were affected.

Georgian interior ministry spokesman Zura Gvenetadze said: "She found the cable while collecting scrap metal and cut it with a view to stealing it."

She faces up to three years in prison if convicted of damaging property in the impoverished ex-Soviet state.

But because of her age the authorities released her pending further enquiries.

Description:
Will she come and help me cut my new washing line, I have been trying for weeks to do so and have blunted all tools I own.

So, if you want to nick cable from the authorities get granny to say she did it. "Honest guv, here's the spade I used."
“... all three internet providers in Armenia were crippled for hours...”

Hours?!?

Some old dear rams a spade through a fibre optic cable and it's repaired in a few hours? Amazing! I supervise large civil engineering projects in the UK and if one of our contractors severed a major fibre optic cable, people would be off-line for weeks. You can't just 'cut-and-joint' fibre optic cables like you can copper ones – you have to replace kilometres of the damn stuff.

So you don't believe that story then birdi?

jem
^^^ I can only suppose that the border between Armenia and Georgia isn't infested with gas mains, high voltage electricity cables, sewers, water mains and other assorted services that would make a quick repair difficult!
