BT and Broadband availability .. grrrr

This is an odd one. The four households who live near me all work from home, all have home highway and all have been refused Broadband by BT. We live just a couple of miles from a Broadband enabled exchange, but because BT have chosen to route the telephone wires half way round the countryside before they come to us. We are deemed to far from the exchange for the service to be provided. Three of the households will change soon and the new inhabitatants will again all work and run businesses from home. But we now understand that home highway cannot be passed from one set of people to the other. Also to add insult to injury, home highway has apparently been discontinued by BT. So in other words, when each person's home highway is deactivated, the next person to move in will only be able to have the old analogue line. Surely BT has some obligation to its customers?

Apparently, if we want yet another line check for Broadband. Someone has to volunteer to have their home highway taken out in order that the check can be made. Once removed it presumably won't be reinstalled. And they will still have to pay BT to reactivate the home highway (always supposing they will).

What a state of affairs. Does anyone know of any way that we can get BT to shift their position on this one. It's so tantalising being so close to the exchange but with no chance of a decent connection. Shameful really.

Thanks everyone.

When I converted from Home Highway to BB the clever people at BT said that if the tests proved that I could not have BB then they would re-instate the Home Highway at no extra cost. You are right, they have to completely disable the Home Highway (ISDN) to do the BB test and installation.

Keep up the pressure on the phone company.
