Posting it in here as I think it encompasses News, Animals and general everyday concerns.

Basically, a 5 year old Americal Bull dog cross has been taken from it's home in Belfast because the local council feel it falls under the 'pitt bull type' breed which is deemed a dangerous dog in NI and they're pushing the family to sign it over so it can be destroyed. It's not attacked anyone or anything, it's simply because it appears to be that type.

Whereas I understand that dangerous dogs can be lethal in the wrong hands and it only takes a second to turn nasty, it is right to kill this dog simply because of it's breed?
Does that then mean that, if everywhere were to follow this kind of action, dogs of these breeds would all be killed?

It's fair to say some people will still pass judgement because they're usually kept by the rough-arse scallies to project their 'hardness', but no information is given about the family other than it's a couple with a 12 year old daughter and another 2 year old dog.

So, basically, is it right what Belfast City council are aiming to do? To eliminate any kind of risk by even 'sentencing' the innocent? Or is it wrong, inhumane and completely against nature? Or anything else.....?

If you have stong views against this there's a petition.. http://www.savelennox.co.uk/ .. but I just posted this as it seems a decent talking point!

aye but this isn't even about that, it's simply about it's (perceived) breed!
I don't like dogs....especially those types. So I'll be sitting on the fence on this one.
Bloody things, Destroy it.

Oh, I thought this was going to be about Annie Lennox and what she's planning on getting up to in a car park!
Sorry, I'm with Jemisa on this one

but why destroy it?
To answer the question seriously....

I think it's disgusting that any animal is judged like this on nothing more than "we think it might be so and so breed so we are going to kill it"

Judge the dog by its temperament, not by what it looks like.
If a breed has been declared 'illegal' it is because there have been enough concerns about the 'breed'.

Sorry, but in my opinion it has to go.
Euthanise it... and whilst they are at it can they come to England and seize my neighbour's dog too before I take a shovel to it's head.
Question Author
does that mean the whole breed should be erradicated then JTH?
Furthermore, it's only perceived to be that type of dog, without, apparently, any expert guidance.
Muzzle it in public yeah, but kill a dog because some of it's kind have turned aggressive?
I read an article some time back that DNA could be used to discover the parentage of a dog. The article referred to owners of mongrels being able to find out what breeds made up their particular mutt.

I don't think that it should be killed merely because of a perceived parentage - but I really don't have an answer to the dilemma.
I don't agree at all that this dog should be "destroyed".
How can they justify destroying the dog just because they believe the breed to be dangerous without actually knowing the breed????
Essentially all dogs are dangerous if not treated properly etc, rather than destroying the dog why not take him/her to a shelter so it can be rehomed..that is if the dog breed is actually classed as "dangerous".
