Genes reunited source data

I have found a record of a birth that has a different surname to that on the birth certificate. Genes reunited does not recognise a search for the name on the birth certificate. Can anyone offer an explanation?

Clerks do not always write everything down correctly. Finding the errors is part of the job when tracing your family tree. I guess the same applies to those who transcribed the microfiche and paper record to computer database record too.
