For smokers, non-smokers or shopkeeper, I can't see how this useless piece of legislation can benifit anyone. Is this just another example of barking mad big brother propaganda?

I do love how the paying the government the tax revenue is becoming the most important reason to continue smoking, I mean they could not cope without you smokers!! makes me wonder why they are making smoking so anti social, do you thing they realise that your ciggies fund the NHS amongst other things??

very short sighted of them imo..
I sell cigs at work and even though virtually every customer complains about the price of them (not cheap as we don't get bulk stock) they always pay up for them, (I have so many times been close to saying 'if you can't afford it don't smoke' but I am behaving)
Addicts grumble about the cost of their drug of choice, but as they're addicted they really have no choice.
they could try quitting, a lot of people manage to..
It is ridiculous how many if the customers talk to me aa if I am criminal for charging over £7 for 20 cigs, it's as though I am charging for life saving drugs!
Did not read all the posts so its probably all been said. Imagine your 16, your told smokings bad for you, its not right, your costing the government a fortune (NHS) its hidden and put under the counter in nondiscript packaging...................hmmm yep I'm gonna give it a go, coz I'm 16

I don't really see how this will help...................I'm a non smoker but if I were 16 again who knows?????????????
16? most kids have tried smoking by the time they are 10 I think
This latest ruling on cigs is typical of this "government" rabble. All policies seem to be made up each day on the back of an envelope. If everyone gave up cigs the economy would collapse. Supermarkets are strictest of all outlets in terms of cigs and alcohol sales. It will not effect kids smoking at all.
6-7 pound a pack would put me off if I were 16...
Waste of money, putting fags in plain packaging and not having them on display in shops will not stop people buying them

If the same thing happened to beer/spirits would it stop people buying alcohol?

I think not
I doubt the economy would collapse if everyone gave up smoking. There would be a considerable saving of NHS support costs, which I have to admit I am benefiting from at the present time. The 113 contributions that have been made on this subject show how much people are conerned about smoking, but I have not seen one about the consequences of smoking too much, so let me tell you now..... I am dying because I smoked too many too long. I have severe COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary desease), and only 38% of my lungs are left working. There is no cure, I am short of breath and have not been out of the house since last October. I have two nurses who call in from time to time to monitor my condition and I take 18 tablets a day. My wife has missed out on all the great things we were going to do when I retired and by necessity become a full time carer. I have just completed writing my funeral service and the obituary for the papers. I have also sorted out a list of who to invite to the wake, Not much left to do now, and In only have myself to blame. So if any of you still think smoking is for you, then please think again.

Well said.

Before I make a comment on your post, I want to say that I am not in any way extolling the virtues of smoking. I'm simply stating that hiding fags from public view is a pointless gesture which will achieve absolutely nothing.

You say, “... I doubt the economy would collapse if everyone gave up smoking. There would be a considerable saving of NHS support costs, which I have to admit I am benefiting from at the present time...”

Costs which you are fully entitled to. The fact is that VAT raised from the sale of cigarettes in the UK exceeds the cost to the NHS for smoking related illnesses by several billion pounds. There is a rather insidious idea that I hear more and more that people should start paying for their NHS treatment if their condition is deemed to be self-inflicted. This is a very, very slippery slope... but that's another debate.

I wish you well.
