For the record, very few physicians have a Doctorate. The term 'Doctor' is a courtesy title only. In the USA, dentists and vets also assume this courtesy title.
In Britain, physicians usually have MB and BS. Physicians with an MD (a true Doctorate) are very rare indeed, but in the US virtually all physicians have an MD.
PhDs are a different kettle of fish, and can be gained for any subject of research. For instance, I knew a PhD who's thesis was; ' Is being a woman depressing ?'
